Thank You
Impact’s 2018 Back to School
Block Party

Let me begin with the words, “thank you” as a way to express my heart felt gratitude for your assistance in underwriting this year’s Back to School Block Party. It’s but a few days after  the event, and the  process of putting everything away will take a while, but in my mind is the  huge crowd that was here, and how much they appreciated everything. Allow me to give you a brief review:

*We started setup promptly at 11, and already the crowd had started forming. We began immediately to set  up canopies to provide relief from the sun, and took  out tables and chairs to make the waiting more comfortable.

*We began at 1, with all the canopies in place, snow cone, popcorn, and cotton  candy machines al ready running. Hot dogs were being served, games now being played, and backpacks being disbursed. Each child would pick a backpack  color containing teacher requested supplies (grade appropriate), receiving also ear buds, a dental hygiene kit, a New Testament, a box of Girl Scout cookies, coupons for food/appetizers from Texas Corral and/or Chick-Fil-A, and pencils, paper, ink pens, etc. After receiving the  back pack, then  it was on to the socks/underwear distribution points. The lines were steady for well over 2 hours.

*Throughout the afternoon, we hosted a magic show  and a “Carol’s Cuisine Fruit of the Spirit pie baking class,” along with haircuts, nail polishing, games, jump houses, volleyball, ice cream from Culvers, peanuts from Texas Corral, and just about everything to entertain a child, while parents and grandparents looked through the 25+ tables full of good  used clothing.

About 750 backpacks were distributed to the children/youth of Merrillville/Gary/Hobart/Lake Station/Calumet Township. We have tracking on all the students and will use that information to see how else we can serve the many families in our area.

Thank you! You helped make all this (and so much more)  possible on August 11. Thank you for your generosity, your love and concern  for the children/youth of this area, and the encouragement given to not only students, but parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles as they direct their children to return well prepared to the classrooms to achieve, grow and become tomorrows adults. Thank you.

Glen Lerner Gives Back Packs Hope with Phil’s Friends

Phil’s Friends

“Volunteering with Phil’s Friends gives us the chance to be the bearers of light in a seemingly hopeless situation,” says attorney Glen Lerner.

On Friday, June 22, the team at Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys will do our part to spread hope to those who so desperately need it. From 9:30am to 11:00am, we will be at the Indiana Hope Center in Crown Point, Indiana, packing and sending the light of hope in the form of care packages with Phil’s Friends. Our team is excited to lend our time to such a noble cause.

Phil’s Friends and Their Mission of Hope

Phil’s Friends is a nonprofit, Christian agency with the mission to bring hope and support to those battling cancer in the United States. They do this by providing care packages and weekly Cards of Hope to patients and their families. They also invoke the power of prayer to assist and support cancer patients on their road to recovery.

Founder Phil Zielke knows exactly how that kind of hopelessness and defeat can cloud one’s mindset after a cancer diagnosis. As a two-time cancer survivor himself, Mr. Zielke is no stranger to these feelings. These feelings of despair can have a crippling effect on not only the patient, but their family as well. That is why Phil’s Friends is committed to being the light for families that have found themselves in the dark. A caring volunteer assembles each package with items to bring comfort and joy to its recipient. Along with the care packages, patients will also receive weekly encouragement from our volunteers in the form of Cards of Hope. These hand-colored cards aim to let the patient and their family know that they have more people in their corner praying for their recovery.

“A cancer diagnosis can leave a person feeling hopeless, alone, scared, and helpless. These feelings aren’t limited to the person who receives the diagnosis. Cancer can send shockwaves throughout a whole family. We make a living out of bringing people closure during some of their darkest times. Volunteering with Phil’s Friends gives us the chance to be the bearers of light in a seemingly hopeless situation,” says attorney Glen Lerner. “We are excited and proud to give our time and energy to provide hope to those who need the strength to continue one of the hardest fights of their life.”

Miller Elementary School Receives School Supplies

Glen Lerner Merrillville Provides Supplies for Miller Elementary School

Miller Elementary School received a donation of backpacks that were filled with school supplies, including pencils, crayons, and paper, and distributed to students on the first day of school. It was all made possible through a partnership between Crossroads Connects, the charitable arm of the Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys with offices in Merrillville. Miller staff provided the chamber with the list of supplies at the end of the last school year. Chamber members as well as the Glen Lerner Attorneys ordered the supplies in bulk and donated hours assembling the 365 backpacks at Lerner’s Maywood office. The Miller Staff and students are overwhelmed with joy over this unprecedented donation. This will also help to make sure that the Miller students are successful learners everyday. This partnership is amazing and it will continue to impact every student, everyday.

Impact Church Back to School Block Party

Impact Church Back to School Block Party 2017

On August 12, 2017, Impact Church in Merrillville, Indiana hosted its 2017 Back to School Block Party. The event, which took a year to plan, drew over 1,600 individuals and served 600 students with basic school supplies. 150 volunteers, including some of our very own Glen Lerner staff, assisted the church with set up, school supply and clothing distribution, haircuts, serving meals and supervised kid’s activities. This event truly demonstrated love in action! Families had a great time; the kid’s walked away with back packs full of school supplies and volunteers left with big smiles on their faces proud of the contribution they made. We could not have asked for a better day! Special thanks to Impact Church for your compassionate ministry in Merrillville and for the opportunity you gave us to sponsor such a wonderful event.

2017 Gary, Indiana Back to School Bash

2017 Back to School Bash

The Salvation Army Gary-Merrillville Corps and Carter Memorial Church partnered once again to host the 2017 Back to School Bash in Gary, Indiana. Through this annual partnership, and with the help of business sponsors such as Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys, 400 local kids were gifted with back packs filled with school supplies. This event also included a community fair, free hearing tests, haircuts, lunch, treats and fun activities for the kids. At the event, our Glen Lerner volunteers were tasked with a very important responsibility. In an hour and a half, they successfully cranked out over 1,000 ice cones for the kids! It is always an honor to serve alongside organizations such as The Salvation Army and Carter Memorial Church.

Adopt a School Project: Edgar L. Miller School Merrillville, Indiana

Adopt a School Project: Edgar L. Miller School Merrillville, Indiana

Glen Lerner Gives Back and our newest partner, Crossroads Connects, Inc. of the Crossroads Regional Chamber in Merrillville, Indiana came together in recent months to adopt 368 students at Edgar L. Miller Elementary School. This Adopt a School project was birthed out of our mutual organizations’ desire to meet the needs of low-income students with school supplies needed to start their year off right. Since this was the first year in partnership with the Chamber, it was mutually agreed upon that we would focus on one school and aim for quality versus quantity. By pulling our organizations’ resources together, the partnership made it possible for each student to receive a minimum of 80% of the school supplies requested by each of their teachers.

The school supplies were ordered in bulk and shipped to our Glen Lerner Maywood, IL satellite office. From this location, volunteers from Crossroads Connects and Glen Lerner got to work by sorting and assembling the back packs. This labor of love took several days and was completed by 11 volunteers. Our Glen Lerner staff is grateful for the partnership with Crossroads Connects as both organizations were able to make a greater impact together that far exceeded what each of us could have done on our own.

On August 16th, 2017, the Miller student body was presented with the supplies during their first school assembly of the year. There to celebrate with the kids, and welcome them back to school was the local school staff; Mr. Studebaker (School Superintendent), Mrs. Griffin (School Principal) and representatives from both Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys and Crossroads Connect. Having a presence at the assembly and being able to experience the excitement in the room reminded us why we embarked on this project in the first place; it was always about the kids. Principle Griffin approached us at the end of the assembly and expressed her profound gratitude for the school supplies. She commented that although in the past the school had received similar donations, this contribution was like no other. She was blown away by the generosity and attention her school received through this project.

Thank you Miller Elementary for the opportunity to serve your students! On behalf of our Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys and Crossroads Connect, we wish you the best this year has to offer.

Glen Lerner Gives Back Summer 2017

Glen Lerner Gives Back Summer 2017

Summer camp can be one the most exciting and life-transforming experiences that any young person can have. And yet, many children of low-income families never get to experience it. For this reason, our personal injury firm has partnered with The Salvation Army in Gary, Indiana and Waukegan, Illinois to make camp of summer 2017 a reality for 30 underprivileged youth.

While at The Salvation Army’s Wonderland camp, young people will enjoy swimming in the lake, boating, music, archery, outdoor recreation, sports, arts and crafts, all while making new friendships. For many of these kids, the time away from home is in itself lifesaving as camp serves as a safe haven from the challenges and dangers that kids face on the streets and making summer 2017 the best one ever.

Here is what some of our sponsored youth had to say about their recent camp experience:

Santana Harper – 11 “I really loved going to camp. I never went before and it was awesome and I met really cool people there. My favorite part was being on the drum line.”

Shar’Mayne Harper – 9 “Thank you for sponsoring me to go to Music Camp. I went with my brother and cousin and it was super fun. We got to sing and had $5 for snacks at the snack shop plus we were able to swim every day. I did arts and crafts and made cool stuff. I can’t wait to go back.”

D’Maiya Clark – 8 “Camp was really fun. I made lots of friends. I got to sing and perform with my cabin at the talent show in my pajamas! And I can go in the pool now without floaty things!”

Carrington Slaughter – 8 “I really liked camp. I made lots of stuff and had fun. I sang and danced and ran around. Snack time and meals were my favorite.”

Sade Norton – 11 “I didn’t think I’d like camp at first since it was my first time and I only knew my brothers. I enjoyed hanging out with the girls in my cabin and playing games. I liked my theory class and want to be in band at the Corps next year.”

Armani Norton – 11 “Camp was good. I got to go swimming and meet new people. My counselor was cool and I got to sing. I’m glad I got to go and have fun.”

Jeffrey Norton – 16 “So camp was fun. We had great guests that really took time to be with me and my friends. I was in the highest choir and had a good time singing. I got to do stuff that I wouldn’t have been able to do in the city. Hopefully I can even work at camp next summer. Thank you for this opportunity.”Summer 2017

2017 Walk for STH “Stronger Together”

2017 Walk for STH “Stronger Together”

Walk for the Sojourner Truth House

On Saturday, June 10th the Gary, Indiana community including those at Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys, came together for the 2017 walk for STH themed “Stronger Together”. For those that attended, the event was more than just a walk; it was a celebration of hope. Local churches, businesses, government officials, and concern community members answered the call to fundraise and volunteer on behalf of the homeless and at-risk women and children.

On that beautiful day, over 100 volunteers and 400 walk participants gathered at the STH’s grounds to prepare for the 1.6 mile walk around the neighborhood. At the event, the Glen Lerner Merrillville injury attorneys and staff handed out water, sports drinks and nutritious snacks for the event participants. What a joy it was for us to be able to interact with each of the groups that participated and join in their excitement for service.

Thanks to the outstanding work of the STH staff and volunteers, the 2017 STH Walk went as planned and without a hitch. Sister Peg Spindler, executive director, reported that STH had surpassed the amount they hoped they would reach by the end of that day. This success would not have been possible without the collaboration of like-minded groups coming together. Over 27 sponsors comprised of local businesses including the staff and Merrillville personal injury lawyers at Glen Injury Attorneys contributed to make sure that every dollar raised through the event could go towards direct services to the woman and children STH serves.

TOGETHER, we were definitely STRONGER!

Sojourner Truth House, a ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, is hosting its annual Walk for STH on June 10th, 2017 from 8-11 am. This event seeks to raise $115,000.00 needed to continue to provide direct services to at-risk-homeless woman and children in Gary, Indiana. Glen Lerner supports the 2017 STH Walk.

On any given month, over 2,000 clients come to STH seeking assistance.  Each of them is given individualized care and attention with the ultimate goal of every woman and child experiencing hope and healing through the services they provide. Some of these services include daily meals, clothing, transportation, transitional housing assistance, and personal enrichment and wellness courses.

For us, having witnessed firsthand STH at work, it is evident that they are maximizing every dollar and every inch of their facility to impact the lives of some of the most vulnerable in Gary, Indiana.

We are excited about this upcoming fundraising event and encourage the community at large to participate and donate towards this great cause.  The Walk for STH is a family-friendly event and everyone is welcome to attend!
