The Marketed Appeal of Essure Implants
Over 750,000 women have been implanted with an Essure birth control device since it was first introduced to the market by the mega German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company Bayer in November 2002. Furthermore, a majority of those women live in the United States.
For many American women, Essure was an appealing birth control option for two reasons. First, the product was marketed as a permanent birth control product in the form of an implant. Second, it was the only non-surgical option of permanent birth control sold in the United States.
Another appealing aspect included the ease of implantation for the device; medical practitioners performed the outpatient procedure in a minimal amount of time.
A medical professional first implants the device into the fallopian tubes through the vagina. Once in place, the implant encourages the formation of scar tissue.
In theory, this type of hysteroscopic sterilization blocks sperm cells from reaching the eggs in the ovaries, thus preventing pregnancy. However, even this form of permanent birth control still has more than a 9% chance of failure.
Black Box Warning Added in 2016
The appeal of Essure implants began to lessen as more and more women reported negative side effects. Due to the many reported complaints, the FDA ordered Bayer to place a “black box” warning on product packaging in 2016. Part of the required warning was to clearly state the potential risk of needing the device surgically removed at a later date. Unfortunately, Essure removal can take multiple surgeries or even hysterectomy.
At the same time, Bayer received orders to conduct a patient survey of 2,200 patients.
In light of the many complaints later filed by women reporting complaints of pain and injury, the FDA issued restrictions on the sale and distribution of Essure in April of 2018.
Just one month later, the FDA required doctor’s to show any women expressing an interest in an Essure implant a checklist of the device’s risks prior to implantation.
Currently, more than 16,000 women have filed Essure lawsuits against Bayer. These women claim the implant caused permanent, serious side effects. They also claim Bayer withheld side effect reports from the public.
Essure Risks and Side Effects
FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb stated that the device has been associated with serious risks and side effects including persistent pain and perforation of the uterus and fallopian tubes. Side effects can occur during insertion, as well as after the procedure.
Metal allergies also resulted as the implant consists of a polyester fiber surrounded by a nickel alloy coil. Aside from these serious complications, other reported noteworthy risks and side effects include:
- Migration of the coils into the pelvis or abdomen
- Severe autoimmune responses
- Essure device breakage
- Internal injuries
- Bowel or bladder injury
- Abdominal cramps
- Device migration
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Fetal death
Bayer Denies Implants Cause Harm
In July of 2018, Bayer announced it would stop selling Essure implants in December of this year; the company pulled the product from other international markets in 2017. Despite pulling the product out of the U.S. market, the company continues to deny these implants harm women.
Bayer also insists they came to this decision based on lack of sales due to inaccurate and misleading publicity, not from a belief Essure devices are harmful or dangerous.
